Discovery Channel Visits Hatteras
Local kiteboarder Slezak appears on "Stunt
Junkies"
by Shelby Kinnaird
You may remember our interview
with professional kiteboarder and kiteboarding coach Jason Slezak in the
July 2006 issue of Half Vaster. Since we spoke with Jason, he
has been featured on an episode of the extreme sports program "Stunt
Junkies" on the Discovery Channel. The episode, entitled "Kiteboard
Island Leap," first aired on Sept. 6, 2006.
Jason's stunt was to approach a takeoff ramp, jump across an entire island
on a kiteboard and land on another ramp only three feet wide. The two
ramps were about 140 feet apart and the stunt required Jason to achieve
a height of approximately 40 feet in the air in order to clear the island.
To further complicate matters, Jason was not able to see the other side
of the island or the landing ramp from the takeoff ramp.
According to Jason, the difficult part was not the distance, but the accuracy.
He said it's fairly easy to take off and land somewhere on the water,
but to land on a ramp only three feet wide was very challenging.
Did he make it? We don't know yet! We didn't find out about the episode
until after Sept. 6 and haven't been able to catch a rerun. We've sent
an email to Jason asking for the details and will update this story as
soon as he responds.
